Pet overpopulation is a serious concern. Each year millions of healthy companion animals are killed in shelters around our country. In 2004, almost 4 million lost and unwanted dogs and cats were euthanized in American animal shelters, a rate of one animal every nine seconds. Many more are abandoned or abused, and live a short, miserable life.
The best available data shows that a relatively small percentage of animals produces the majority of the pet overpopulation problem. We cannot adopt our way out of this dilemma. The homeless pet crisis is a direct result of animals left unalterd in our communities.
Every cat or dog who dies as a result of pet overpopulation - whether humanely in a shelter or by injury, disease, or neglect - is an animal who, more often than not, would have made a wonderful companion, if only given the chance.
